1st Dennis Munday, Clowning About $1500This work demonstrates a loose painterly quality that invites the reader to revisit and reconsider again and again the character of the portrayed. The use of sombre greens is enlivened not only by the vibrant yellows, red and white but also by the cheeky chap looking back at us. This artist allows paint to do a lot of work, which is as it should be.2nd Ranee Hanlen, You Have Reached Your Destination $1000The invitation to tag along on this journey with the artist gives great joy to the work. Diagonals are difficult to convincingly imbed in the picture plane - in this case it assists the narrative sequence of the work by giving the reader a sense of snap shots that were taken along the way and placed to imply the uphill and down dale feeling that any long trip necessitates. (Ranee's Intangible Asset was acquired by the CVC for the Grafton Regional Gallery)Highly Commended Group 1Dave Carroll Cottage, Yamba Hill $500Sensitively painted with thoughtful use of colour and brushwork. You can almost feel the artist hesitate before each brush stroke is applied to the canvas surface. The picture plane is skilfully constructed, giving the reader a real sense of the space surrounding this iconic Yamba structure.Roslyn Dux Rainy Daze $500While direction, paint quality and colour are all beautifully applied, it is the melancholy feel of the rainy day that draws the reader to this work.Highly Commended Group 2Kate Stead Rosemary's Baby $300Excellent use of non-representational form to give narrative intent. There are clues here - not statements, allowing the reader to form their own story.Marlene Szepsy Sunrise on Rock $300A joyful use of vibrant colours, media and forms.Eion McSwan (Steel sculpture, not shown) Departed $300The sense of flight implied in this work is skilfully articulated.Jen van der Weyde Sue's Roses $300Sensitively rendered with precision, technical prowess and a riot of colour.Lisa Kennedy Little Goat Girl $300There is an attention to detail here that does not stifle the innocence and inquisitive nature of girl nor the goat. There is always a temptation to overwork the surface with this type of subject matter, which has been kept well in check in this drawing.Viewers Choice Rainy Daze Roslyn Dux |
